Searching for Spring...

...and we finally found it at the Garfield Park Conservatory!
What a fun way to spend an afternoon.

When there is Ice...

...there should be ice cream!
It is spring break for heaven's sake and we are going to imagine it is warm out this week.

Dinner Companions...

The Dana-Thomas House

I stumbled upon this Frank Lloyd Wright beauty during a short walk in Springfield.
It is rare to find such majesty on a residential corner.

View From Capital Drive...

I've oddly found myself with a lot of alone time in Springfield this week-end.  Leif and I have maxed out our volunteer hours with Finn's soccer club and while I am enjoying the games I really don't have anything else to do during this tournament.  The team feeds Finn and houses him in a room with his teammates; that leaves me flying solo in a nice hotel with room service and comfy beds.   I took a nap today and read a whole lot!  This evening, while Finn was having pizza with the team, I took a stroll to look at the state capital building before heading back to the hotel for the night.  And yes, I just ordered myself dinner and a glass of wine! Being a soccer mom has its perks!

Field Trip Cocktails...

I can't really say too much about this pop-up event, except that riding a school bus with some amazing ladies to get some mighty fine cocktails among many growing things proved to be more than a little fun and exciting!  I am lucky to be a part of the culinary community!

The Dance of the Furies

Choreogrpahy : Isadora Duncan (c. 1904)
Music: Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787) from Orfeo Eurydice
Staged and Directed by Lori Bellilove
"The Furies or Erinyes were powerful Greek divinities who intervened to punish those who committed sacrilegious crimes.  They were at once tormentors and the damned; lost souls who jealously patrolled the entrance to the underworld."

"For Duncan, the movements of the Furies are deliberately contorted as befits their deformed natures recalling Rodin's Gates of Hell.  It is fair to say that contemporary modern dance, with its stress on weight, tension and abstraction, made its first full-fledged appearance in Isadora's Dance of the Furies in 1904."
exceprted from the MOMENTA program
Emma was truly honored to perform this challenging work among an accomplished group of older dancers.  The littlest of the Furies  proved she was not less fierce than anyone else last night, but she couldn't help smiling when she was taking her well-deserved bow!

Finn's Birthday Dinner...

Finn's uncensored birthday feast featured the hodgepodge of of delicious food items we've all come to expect from our annual indulgence in his honor! I found his inner Frenchman this year and requested a batch of mussels and homemade fries. Finn never fails to surprise us with creative mealtime combinations!

Boys at a Birthday...

Finn was tickled to death to have a few of his boys over for an evening filled with deep dish pizza and cupcakes.  They hung out for several hours and brought a special energy to our house to say the least!

Happy Birthday Finnman!

This round-cheeked, copper-haired, blue-eyed bundle of a baby boy has somehow managed to evolve into an ever-so-handsome young man.  It feels like only yesterday he loved wearing footed
terry cloth pj's and sharing long cuddles with anyone sitting still,
but now his picture proves that 14 is fabulous!
These days Finn is as kindhearted and good-humored as ever, but he is fierce on the soccer pitch and frighteningly knowledgeable about films.  He is a remarkable conversationalist, but adept at listening, too. He is liked by his teachers, has loads of friends and is always quick to offer anyone a helping hand.  He has a wee-bit of of a mischevious side that keeps us on our toes and his frequent laughter is one of the best sounds around our house.

Fourteen looks pretty darn good on him; he is confidently standing at the precipice of a great many changes and I know he is ready for every single one of them!  We are so proud to call him our son.
Happy birthday Finn!  Our lives are forever better for having met you 14 years ago!

Throwback Thursday...

The Elsmo Four circa May of 2000
It is hard to imagine that tiny bald two month old baby is going to be 14 years old this week and his finger licking sister will go on her first official college visit in just two weeks. How time flies.

Happy Paczki Day!

Polish donuts known as Paczki are flying off the shelves of local Chicago bakeries today.  The deep fried bites filled with an assortment of jams or custards are a celebration of Chicago's vibrant Polish community.
I am lucky I got my hands on a few of these sweets for my sweeties around 11am today; lines at Polish bakeries had lines out the door at 4am!
