Seriously, She's Over It...

Chiberia has returned and that means it was colder here today than it was in the South Pole!
Lu was over it the first time this happened and today
she wouldn't leave her pile of fleece blankets for a second.

Our Pine-on-Pine Utopia...

Sometimes all you need to feel rejuvenated is a cozy cabin in Wisconsin full of really big furniture, a bratwurst on a bear plate, Bambi the stuffed deer and five close girlfriends!

Bambi was a little reluctant to participate fully in our frivolity, but we managed to coax her (by reattaching her well-loved legs) to her rightful place by the fire.

This is all I am willing to share about our week-end in the cabin, but it goes without saying that I am thrilled to death to have all four of these incredibly  brave, nurturing, confident and hilarious women in my life...even if one of them needed a dunk in the tub after a good cry.
I love you all more than you know.
Thanks for your friendship.
That's all...except for thoughts of sub-par smoked salmon and yaks of all kinds.
Oh and skittletits.

Futsal...

Finn has been busy playing futsol this winter as way to stay fit and have some fun.  His style of play is very well suited to futsal's smaller pitch, faster pace and heavy dependence on foot skills. The ball is smaller and quite heavy so it won't leave the ground easily; players have to use strength and quick thinking to get things done on a futsal pitch.  I have been having such a good time watching him play and this morning he meshed two sweet goals for his winning team!

Over it.

Thankfully our Java girl is doing much better after some strong medication, but our old biddy received a lot of our attention and a boat load of hand-shredded chicken during the past week.  Our resident diva was none too happy to be in her big sister's shadow and then the the temperatures dropped to arctic lows.  If there is anything our six-pound wonder likes less than playing second fiddle to any creature on the planet it is bitterly cold weather.  Little Lu has spent the past several days wrapped in a blanket with a look of genuine irritation on her face.  It looks like she is waiting for someone to tell her this has all been a big joke.  Out little dog just cracks me up!

The legendary pasta-filled pastry dome known as Timpano is the centerpiece of meal in the film Big Night.  Chris explained that the pasta, hard boiled egg, meatball, sausage, and cheese filled concoction is the result of putting bits of leftovers to use in the Abruzzo region of Italy.  The dish quite literally takes days to make.

Every once in a great while there is a night that goes down in history as one heck of a memorable experience and last night's ode to the 1996 foodie film Big Night was just such an occasion! Our dear friends Chris and Penny threw the most epic of pot-luck meals and while everyone made individual contributions to the feast, Chris' Timpano was the stand-out dish of the night and nothing short of extraordinary!  The food and drinks were flowing all evening long and the friends in the room were festive and merry.  In fact the parade of dishes felt never ending at one point, but despite the endlessness of it all were sad to see this extraordinary evening come to an end.
"Bite your teeth into the a** of life!"

A One Woman Bakery...

I am turning out bread products like a mad woman this afternoon!  Four beautiful artisan loaves and one fennel and goat cheese foccacia.  I think we are in for a BIG NIGHT!

Supper Club Concept...

Yesterday I invited our friends over for a super casual and very last minute movie night.  Not only did they accept our invitation, but insisted that they bring a home-made dinner with them.  Before I knew it I was slurping down an insanely good French Onion Soup and savoring an open faced venison sandwich.

It was a cozy and delicious evening from start to finish.  I really think I stumbled on a brilliant supper club concept; it is called I'll invite you over and then you bring the dinner
Seriously, this meal was such a treat!

On the plate in 2013...

Click to play this Smilebox slideshow

Some pretty delicious things made their way to the plate in my kitchen over the course of the past year! I am looking forward to playing on old themes in 2014 and discovering new inspirations in the New Year.
