Jumpers...

In addition to swinging on tractor tires, feeding some goats, shooting a corn cob gun and enjoying a few duck races at the pumpkin patch this week-end, Emma and Finn took some time to jump on a huge trampoline in the middle of a giant field.  I just love a good healthy dose of autumn fun!

Beauty and the Beast...

...on their way to a Halloween Party.
Too cute!

Spinning Plates Premier...

On Friday evening Leif and I attended one of the Chicago premier parties for the documentary Spinning Plates.  In addition to taking in the memorable film focused on three distinctive restaurants including Alinea, we were able to check out the offerings at The Aviary following the movie.  Celebrating the release of a such a moving food focused film would have been enough of a culinary fix to keep me satisfied for months, but then I actually got to meet and chat with Chef Achatz.

To say this was a truly exhilarating moment for me is a huge understatement!

Haunting Chicken...

It is no secret that I love Halloween and also spend a tremendous amount of time cooking and photographing food.  When these two loves of mine come together, something truly wicked is bound to emerge on the plate.  Seriously though...I was even a little scared when this raven hued dish came together in such terrifying fashion.  I love all the tiny little details in the composition like the jar of belladonna, black feathers and eggs in the background, but that front-and-center clawed foot really captures the evil-spirit of the holiday in my opinion.  Read my full column HERE.
Happy Haunting!

Apples in Jars...

So a friend of mine posted this letter from Mason Jars asking that crafty folks everywhere (no matter how obsessed with rustic charm they may be ) to please give it a rest and use the sturdy jars for their intended purposes...like you know...for actually canning something.  I thought the letter was pretty funny so I commented about  how frequently I "bastardize" humble mason jars around my house and she hit me back in a private message saying she had just had a dream about me. Apparently in the dream I gave her a tour of my kitchen and taught her how to cook with apples.  Ironically, I had just made a batch of these sweet caramel apple cheesecakes in mason jars.  How weird is that?

Through Someone Else's Eyes...

It is fascinating to see my food through the eyes of another photographer
and always a pleasure to spend an evening with a camera toting kindred spirit.

My Very Own Miniature Plant...

So last month my friend Ang hosted some awesome Oak Parkers for the week-end and Jen's daughter made her this really lovely gift. I immediately coveted the darn thing and even said so on facebook.  Considering I am a total novice when it comes to extorting gifts from neighbors, it came as an enormous surprise when a pretty little package showed up on my doorstep containing my very own micro garden. And isn't it the sweetest thing? Thanks so much Jen; receiving this bit of beauty brought me loads of happiness!

Happiness is Homecoming...

I honestly love watching how Emma puts  her dressy looks together!  She looked like such a retro classic beauty by the time she was finished getting ready for the homecoming dance last night that I was compelled to put her in the back alley just to add a little contradictory energy to my photos of her.  After dodging the rains to get these shots, Sebastian arrived with flowers in hand and two of her besties also joined in on our photo fun.  Madison and Sam, who went to the dance as fabulous single ladies, are too cute for words.  The happy quartet headed to the dance as a group...luky Sebas!

Following the dance Emma and Sebastian came back to our house to enjoy a little brie and candlelight before Emma headed to spend the night at a super girly sleep-over with a bunch of her friends!
Happy Homecoming 2013!

Homecoming Lovebirds...

On the most basic level this photo makes me very happy that corsages and boutonnieres have not fallen out of fashion.  My mom pinned all of her corsages to her bulletin board in her childhood bedroom and I did the exactly same thing.  I will be curious to see of Emma follows suit.  I just love the enduring ritual of school dances and I appreciate how these two look quite timeless together.
