I love my bamboo steamer, but I find I have to replace mine more frequently than I'd like.  The last time I purchased one in Chinatown my friends at Woks n' Things told me to submerge the steamer in a sink full of cool water at least once a month.  After a good 20 minute soak the soft bamboo comes back to life and I know my sensitive kitchen friend will be around a little longer as a result.  If you've never owned one be sure to pick one up the next time you are in an Asian market.  Steaming dumplings, fish and veggies is as simple as can be when you have a bamboo steamer; just be sure to line the baskets with parchment rounds or lettuce leaves to prevent sticking.
