Emma's Birthday Dinner

I often recap Finn's birthday dinners (2012, 2011, 2010) because they are so varied (crazy actually) but, over the years I have failed to mentioned the unwavering devotion Emma has when it comes to selecting her birthday dinner!  Each year her menu is the same...Mom's Ribs, Roasted Rosemary Potatoes, Lima Beans, Homemade Birthday Baguette and Pulgra Butter! Consistency has always been one of Emma's strengths and her delicious menu  is certainly evident of that admirable trait.

What 15 looks like...

Burgeoning  confidence  and continued grace.
Kindness, inclusion, creativity
New found independence
Sleepy eyed academic exhaustion tempered by a tireless work ethic
Ready for friendship, laughter and fun
Capable of quiet moments of introspection
Hours of texting and comatose levels of sleep
Affectionate, courageous and strong
Fifteen is
Poised at the precipice
-on the edge of womanhood-
A future within sight
Rooted, but ready to fly
Happy fifteenth birthday to the Amazing Emma Grace!

A Spring Study of Emma Grace

Seasonal photo shoots are becoming a fun little tradition for Emma and me.  I loved how she looked in autumn, but spring also seems to suit the amazing Emma Grace!

Happy Lashes

It has always bothered me that my mascara never looks like it does on TV commercials.  I know that sounds silly, but it is totally true.  Lash blast, great lash, lash out, straight wands, curved wands, cheap and expensive, I've tried them all, but nothing seems to create the dramatic lashes I been looking for.
Until now.
The other night I was having trouble sleeping (not because of my lack luster lases) and turned on a middle of the night infomercial.  I have no idea what the heck they were advertising, but a very authoritative make-up artist told me that I could buy the cheapest mascara on the planet and still have great looking lashes.  All you have to do is bend the tip of the mascara wand to a 45 degree angle.  And it totally works!
I am concerned I may be the only person on planet who didn't know about this simple little trick, but in the event someone out there is as clueless as I am, I thought I'd pass it along my new found wisdom!
Happy Lashes!

Mother's Day Wishes from Finn

All I Know is that I Love You

Mom, you are the bomb
Spending time with you and talking to you
Makes me want to break into song,
Living with you my face is never long,
WAIT!! Those aren't tongs,
All your advice makes me feel strong.

Flipping burgers, twisting skewers, you can never go wrong.
Getting me up at dawn,
Driving me all day long.

You care for me,
You love me.
And sometimes I take that for granted but,
Some of my favorite times are when we snuggle up in our little hut,
And I really hope the door between us will never shut.

We've had our fair share of hardships,
A couple of bad trips,
But no matter how many bumps in the road we hit,
The one chip off the block that sticks to the tire,
Is I love you.
Finn gave me this poem and a rose following his soccer game on Sunday.  Emma is still working on her gift, but she gave me a sneak peek and I cannot wait to share it here when it is done.
I just love being a mom.

M & M

We have been looking forward to Matt and Marta's wedding day for quite some time now and Saturday evening Leif and I were lucky enough to bear witness to this inevitable and exciting union.  The spirit of the the day was lost on any of the guests and there wasn't a dry eye in the house when they exchanged their heartfelt vows.  Following the ceremony our hosts plied us with pork, beer, and dancing...a lot of pork, beer, and dancing!

"Tongue and Cheek"
A bourbon sour cocktail started the evening perfectly.

Our dinner companions were, of course, first rate!

Congratulations Marta and Matt!
We were truly honored to be a part of your big day.
Much love.

Ten Courses.

To say I have been cooking a great deal lately does not even describe the half of it.  A month long cooking marathon culminated with a custom created ten course dinner for eight I prepared last night at a private Oak Park residence.  I thought all ten dishes were distinctive, but progressed in harmony.  Plating them up reminded me just how much I adore making pretty food.  Take a look...
soft scramble. citrus. crème. chive

cucumber. watercress. asparagus. yellow pepper. tarragon. pistachio

ahi sashimi. wakame. cantaloupe. chile. somen

chicken. shrimp. sweet. spicy. garlic

gruyere. beet. almond

smoked paprika. arugula. cider
