A gift from Emma...

"Hey Mom, I picked this up for you just in case Dad isn't around and I need some help with my algebra homework.  It might be a good thing for you look over. There may be a few things you need to brush up on."
I accepted the fact that Emma is smarter than me long ago, but her optimistic belief that I could "brush up" enough to help her with honors algebra is hilarious to me.  I don't have the heart to tell her that even Cliff's Notes won't help me so I've started stashing money to hire her a tutor!

The Excuse for Canceling Brunch.

This morning I was supposed to have a relaxing ladies brunch with my friends, Kaberi, Cel, Alicia, and Gabby, but Kaberi canceled on us.  It was frustrating to have to change plans at the last minute and frankly Kaberi's excuse for bowing out seemed just a little flimsy to me...
Yep, she thought childbirth was a good enough excuse to miss out on some lovely gingersnap pancakes; I tell you that lady has some nerve.  Obviously, we were all terribly excited to check in on the happy trio and in lieu of brunch we hightailed it to the hospital this morning to help welcome handsome Vikas to the world!
I cannot even express how happy I am for this gorgeous family and Vikas is about as perfectly snuggly as a fourteen hour old baby can be.  He also has the longest eyelashes I've ever seen on a baby! Kaberi looked simply gorgeous and utterly contented.  Here are some of my favorite photos from out beautiful morning...

I figured out this handsome young man was on the way last March when we hosted Vik and Kaberi for dinner.  When our foodie friends suddenly started insisting my menu not include fish with high mercury levels or soft unripened cheeses, we became quite suspicious they had a little bundle of joy on the way!  I loved that our casual dinner became an impromptu celebration! Shortly thereafter, during a lunch at Kuma's Corner, Mr.Mysterio predicted their baby would be a Dog Show Judge! Months later we even threw them an LGC baby shower! So...it feels like we've been waiting for this little guy to arrive for quite a while!

Vikas...meeting you was totally worth the wait.
Welcome to the world, little man.

Chicago Dancing Festival

Yesterday evening our friends Tony and Carla joined us for a picnic dinner and loads of memorable dancing.  I packed up some jam filled rosemary shortbread cookies, a seriously lovely watermelon and tomato salad, and some sandwiches to enjoy at Millennium Park as the sun set around us.  As the Pritzker Pavilion began to glow under the city lights the Celebration of Dance began!

Nine Person Precision Ball Passing-1980
Stravinsky Violin Concerto-1941

Diversion of Angels-1948

Tchaikovsky Pas De Deux-1960

What an exceptional collection of companies and extraordinary series of dances!  This program was among the most diverse I have ever had the privilege of seeing; Finn was mesmerized by Nine Person Precision Ball Passing and the dancers from NYC Ballet received a well deserved standing ovation for their flawlessly executed Pas de Deux.  Emma, of course, marveled at the Martha Graham Company and her goal to attend their summer intensive next year was intensified considerably after seeing Diversion of Angels.

As Emma was settling into her seat for the show she looked around and gushed, "I just love Chicago." I have to say I completely agree with her!

The Middle Man

Finn made the big move to Percy Julian Middle School today and came back with the following feedback...
"Best. School. Day. Ever."
Looks to me like he is off to a great start!

"All I learned is there sure are a lot of different
kinds of hair in high school."
Emma, circa. 2000-age 3.5,  made this comment after spending the day at OPRF  participating  in a Psychology Class experiment concerning the development of consciousness in children.

"People sure do wear their hair a lot a different ways at OPRF.  It is pretty incredible how much your hair defines who you are in high school."
Emma, circa. 2011-age 14, made this comment today after spending her first day as a freshmen with all of the upper classmen in attendance at OPRF.

It is comforting to know that at least some things never change.

High School Bound...

Flying in an historic  biplane has been on my dad's bucket list for years and when my mom discovered a local service at the Grand Geneva offering rides on vintage World War Two planes with an open cockpit we decided to make it a family affair!  Yesterday, the senior men of our family accompanied my dad on his Father's Day flight and had an extraordinary time!  I have not seen my dad this excited in years.  What a wonderful afternoon spent making family memories!

Reason # 112...

...I love having dinner with some of our favorite friends on a Friday night!  The stuffed peppers, halibut kabobs, and company were just as good as the family heirloom inspired puppet show!

Our Java girl is getting up there in years and when my mom put a pair of reading glasses on her the look seemed to suit our good girl perfectly.  She has always been the smartest of dogs, but somehow she seems even wiser with all her gray and a pair of spectacles.  We just love this dog!

Happiness is...

...having Grandma stop over for the evening!  After Finn enjoyed a few days of fun in Lake Geneva, my mom brought him all the way home to enjoy a home cooked dinner, fire in the back yard, and a little girl time with Emma.  Her visits always pass by too quickly!

Huskie Identification.

Emma has the documents to back it up....OPRF has a new student on the way.
Even with her school ID in hand, I find it impossible to believe she is old enough to be heading into 9th grade next week.  How time flies!

Wall Worthy

It's official...if I keep having meals like Next's Tour of Thailand I am going to have to move to a home with more wall space to hang up my menus!

Society Men...

I just love it when two handsome men take their place on the society pages...and wearing plaid no less!

Sunday on the Pitch

This week-end Finn joined his new team at the NISL Seeding Tournament in Rockford.  The Rapids played five games in two days, won their division and placed among the top four U12 teams in the entire league.  Not too bad for a first outing.  Finn had a grand time getting to know his coach and fellow players, but was even more thrilled with the fast paced games on day two.  He had some great moments and we are sure there are more to come as he gets used to his new team and their fast give-and-go style of play!

One Pass...in pictures.
