General Sherman

Bright and early the following morning we made our way back into the park.  We knew we'd need at least ten hours to make it to the end of Kings Canyon if we wanted to stop and take in our surroundings in a relaxing fashion and our first order of business was to take in the General Sherman Tree in the early morning light.

After a pleasant and pretty walk, complete with a little chipmunk friend, the General Sherman started coming into view.  The tree is as tall as a 27 story building and the top branches exceed six feet in diameter and are over 100 feet in length!  The total volume for this bad boy is about 52,500 cubic feet!  By volume, the tree is the largest living thing on the planet. The General is monstrously huge!
