Last night Leif and the kids treated me to dinner at West Town Tavern to celebrate my birthday and it was simply divine! I have been clamoring to dine at this inviting tavern for quite some time now, but every time we've planned to go our plans have been derailed for some reason or another. Last night they went off without a hitch, however, and we settled in for some honest contemporary comfort food. Everything we ate was memorable, well prepared, and comforting and the restaurant buzzed with warmth the entire time we were there.

Our server was hard at work, but eager to spend an extra moment at our table and even explained to Emma from detailed notes what was in the sauce on her duck. Emma fell madly in love with her dinner and needed to know what made it all so wonderful; She learned veal stock was the key to the sauce. As she lapped up the remainder of her dinner she lamented how cruise ships continue to dump waste in our oceans and regulating this practice is next to impossible.

Finn took down a gorgeous portion of pot roast all the while casually explaining to us that some kids at school have dubbed Fridays 'Slap Your Ass Day.' I almost choked on my Brussels Sprouts and Leif stifled a laugh, but Finn quickly informed us he is "not an ass slapper" and "refuses to participate in that holiday" because, you know, he just plays Four Square.

We had one of our regular Elsmo family dinners in rather extraordinary setting and I was reminded quite quickly that we can, in fact, take our children anywhere and enjoy their company just as much as any of our friends. Just as I was feeling about as proud as a mom can feel, our server came over to our table and paid our family the best public compliment we have ever received. Period. And then I felt even prouder. What an absolutely perfect gift.
Happy birthday to me.

Happy belated birthday Melissa! What a perfect evening to spend with your family ... Thanks for sharing! And thank heavens Finn doesn't participate in the "ass slapping!" Too funny.
