[v. ad-vuh-keyt; n. ad-vuh-kit, -keyt]

(v) to speak or write in favor of; support or urge by argument; recommend publicly: He advocated higher salaries for teachers.

2. (n) a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person, cause, etc. (usually fol. by of): an advocate of peace.

(n) a person who pleads for or in behalf of another; intercessor.

The mother of the three little girls I nannied for in high school reminded me not too long ago that no-one will advocate for your child if you don't. I did a little advocating today and even though it wasn't easy and it didn't go very well, at least my kid knows I've got his back.
