Cemitas in the City

A couple of nights ago Leif and I caught an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. The episode centered around sandwiches and highlighted a Chicago joint called Cemitas Puebla. We called up some friends and made our way to Humbolt Park to check it out for ourselves today. The Cemita and Taco Arabes lived up to the hype promised by the spot on Triple D to say the least!

A cemita is served on a unique sesame seed bread and layered with avacado, choice of meat (I went for the carne asada), adobo chipotle chilies, fresh Oaxacan cheese, and papalo (a pungent Mexican herb). This was hands down the best sandwich I have had in years!
We also loved the Tacos Arabes, a middle eastern influenced dish featuring spit roasted pork on a very thin pita. Amazing.

We even got to meet Antonio! He is one of the owners of this family run business and travels to Puebla every six weeks or so to pick up ingredients for this deceptively run of the mill looking store front sandwich shop. Check it out...3619 W North Ave in Chicago.
With our bellies full we headed for a stroll on the Lakefront and back to our friends' house to let kids swim in Z's "fantastic" swimming pools. E even cut Finn's hair while we were there!
While Z was lounging in his pool he looked at Finn and said, "Finn, isn't this the life?"
Yes, after a day like this, I have to say this is the life!
