A note on the Dragonfly

Years ago Leif and I went through the process of identifying our Native American totem animals and the dragonfly was a powerful presence in my medicine teachings. The main symbolisms of the dragonfly are renewal, positive force and the power of life in general. While the meaning of the dragonfly changes from culture to culture many Native American tribes believe humble dragonflies are the souls of the dead and should serve as a reminder of generations past.
When we we bought this house we picked out our dining room light fixture because of the dragonflies and over time the dining room has evolved into a photographic history of sorts. Every night we eat our evening meals surrounded by the faces of all people who are responsible for our existence and beliefs. The lifespan of the dragonfly is short and should serve as a constant reminder to live our brief lives to the fullest. So it would seem the dragonfly represents both the past and the present...instructing us to become keepers of history and remain joyful in the present moment.
And thus the dragonfly becomes the totem for my blog.
